Mad Science
Today we got a free Mad Science class for letting them use our classroom for the past 8 weeks. The students chose the "Air Blast Science Party" and also got to make their own silly putty to bring home. Professor Potion wants the students to remember not to play with the silly putty till after school tomorrow so it can set.
Crew 204 and 203 Christmas Video
For the last month student in room 204 have worked very hard organizing and planning different parts for all grade levels at EMU. Many students gave up many recesses to produce our before concert video. They also spent a lot of time learning to edit with the software we have available at school. Here's what our class produced using the song Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Hannah Montana along with room 203. Have a happy and safe holiday!

Erosion
Last week we built and tested a system to prevent erosion. Students worked in small groups and created a plan for their system. Students were to use recycled materials. Their goal was to try and allow only a small amount of water to get past their system. The systems worked very well and students were quick to point out what they could do to improve the system.

Remembrance Day Assembly
We participated in our Remembrance Day ceremony. Our class shared poems written in English and French, sang two songs and showed a video that some students from our class created. Mme Schellenberg read a story called "Le coquelicot" and had the students singing beautifully. Thank you Mme Schellenberg for an excellent assembly. We also discussed the importance of observing the 2 minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on November 11th.

Guess Who
Students have been working on their "Qui suis je" for the past couple of weeks. They wrote out hints about themselves in French and then recorded themselves reading their hints using the program Audacity. They then did a drawing of themselves using their thumb print as their face. Have a listen and see if you can figure out who it is.

Terry Fox Walk
Today we took part in the Terry Fox National School Run Day. Grade 1 to 4 students from EMU walked to Wayoata School where Terry Fox attended for grades 2 and 3. We've been having class discussions about Terry Fox and students have shared their own personal stories of family members or friends who have or have had cancer. Thank you to all the parent volunteers your help was greatly appreciated.

Peace Day Walk
Today we participated in the Peace Day Walk at The Forks. For the first outing of the year I was impressed at how well behaved everyone was. We took a walk around the museum, we listened to some speeches, we exchanged our peace message with a student from another school and we sang and danced along with entertainer Jacques Chenier. Here's a few student reviews:
Kiya: It was awesome!
Lance: It was an experience I was glad to have.
Thomas: It was the best walk in the world.

Welcome
Welcome to a new school year. I strive to make my classroom a place where all students feel safe and willing to take risks in a positive learning environment. Classroom activities are planned to provide fun and interesting methods to help students learn and understand grade level outcomes and reach his/her fullest potential. I will do my part to encourage and motivate your child through project-based learning, hands-on activities, technology integration and cooperative learning.

Student Claymation Videos
After creating a class claymation earlier in April and May the students wanted to create their own. We decided that small groups of 4 - 5 students would work best. They first wrote their Pourquoi stories in French and spent a lot of time editing and reworking the story to fit their claymation. Once they completed their story they worked on their characters and background for their claymation. This was followed by the students taking multiple pictures with the camera and then loading them into Windows Movie Maker. Then the students recorded their story using Audacity and added sound effects. They then began editing, adding a title and credits as well as mixing in their audio recording.
This process is very difficult for most adults but the students did an amazing job. There were struggles with some groups having to restart because of lost data however they never gave up and persevered. I'm extremely proud of them.

Hi Neighbour
Earlier this past month our class received some exciting news. Every year we participate in the Hi Neighbour banner contest but this year was different. Our class had not one, not two winners but FIVE winners! This is even more impressive when you consider there are only 42 banners chosen from all Transcona schools. These banners are now on display around downtown Transcona. This weekend they will select the winners from each age category at the Hi Neighbour Festival. Good luck to Lance, Kami, Krissy, Cassie and Nate.

Pourquoi Tales Comic Edition
Earlier this month we presented our "Pourquoi Tales" that explains how something came to be. Students worked very hard on this project by writing, designing and eventually using Comic Life to create a short comic about their tale. I was really proud of the students as we had a very short time to complete this project and many of them worked through recess to complete their project or to help a friend finish.
